One of the Best Places to Live in America
In its July 2011 issue, Money Magazine named Louisville one of the best places to live in America. The leading national publication also recognized Louisville with this distinction for 2009, 2007 and 2006. So why has Louisville received these prestigious accolades? It begins with the city’s history.
The Miners Memorial Statue in front of City Hall is a symbol of the history of the people who built Louisville…the coal miners. In August 1877, the Welch Mine opened in Louisville, the first of many coal mines to come.
Louis Nawatny, a local landowner, platted his land and named it for himself. The Town of Louisville was incorporated in June 1882.
Coal miners soon moved to the new town to work in the emerging coal industry. From the beginning, Louisville differed from most coal camps as it was not owned and controlled by a single mining company. Miners lived in the town and walked to work in the nearby mines. They were involved in a democratic community life that was not dominated by mine owners or companies.
Louisville is located in an area known as the Northern Coalfield, an extensive coal field in Boulder and Weld counties. In all, 30 mines were located in and around Louisville.
During the peak years of 1907 and 1909, there were 12 mines in operation. The last mines were closed in 1952.
Today, this rich history is preserved at the Louisville Historical Museum located at 1001 Main Street. Louisville has around 19,000 residents and is located roughly six miles east of Boulder and 25 miles northwest of Denver.
Residents enjoy approximately 1,700 acres of designated open space, and growth is thoughtfully monitored by the City Council.
Louisville is home to several historical sites, with 12 on the National Register of Historic Places.
Each year, Louisville hosts a wide array of community events, including the July 4th Fireworks at Coal Creek Golf Course, one of the finest golf courses along the Front Range.
There is also a Fall Festival over Labor Day weekend featuring a variety of events, including a parade, car show, dog show and much more.
Louisville is also known for its wide variety of real estate ranging from historic residences to new construction in friendly neighborhoods.
Residents enjoy a variety of restaurants and recreational attractions, and all the shopping, business and entertainment amenities desired are conveniently located throughout the town.
